| Police: House Had As Many As 30 Sick Cats |
South Suburban Humane Society investigators removed at least 15 cats - two of which were dead - from a home in the 15900 block of Woodlawn West Avenue in South Holland Wednesday and Thursday after officials declared the two-story house an uninhabitable, unsafe structure.Police and firefighters who entered the house through the second-floor window in protective hazardous-materials suits Wednesday said there may have been as many as 30 cats in the home, said Phyllis Piunti, lead humane investigator with the humane society. Another eight or so may have lived in the garage after climbing through an uncovered vent opening.The home's owner and keeper of the cats, Dorothy Sanders, was ticketed Wednesday. Village ordinance allows a maximum of three cats per residence. The village condemned the house for living purposes and contacted Restoration Ministries to provide Sanders with temporary housing."Our primary concern is the well-being of the individual," said Reggie Johnson, South Holland deputy director of planning and development and code enforcement.Sanders' mother recently died, which may have led to the cat population spiraling out of control, officials said."She said she's been depressed," Piunti said.Covering almost every inch of the floor, putrid-smelling feces and urine lay in the living room.
